INATrace
Open-source Traceability for agricultural supply chains
https://www.nachhaltige-agrarlieferketten.org/en/in-practice/inatraceINATrace is an open-source digital tool designed to enhance supply chain transparency, improve smallholder farmers' livelihoods, and ensure compliance with regulations like the EU Deforestation Regulation. It provides traceability of agricultural products, enabling stakeholders to verify sustainable sourcing, monitor farm activities, and track deforestation risks digitally.
INATrace is an open-source traceability tool developed to increase transparency and efficiency within agricultural supply chains, primarily focusing on smallholder farmers, but it can be used by all supply chains actors. Its main objective is to provide a digital platform where stakeholders can track the journey of agricultural products from cooperative up to the final buying company that can provide information on the packaging via QR codes. This allows buyers, consumers, and regulatory bodies to verify the origin and supply chain data of products like coffee or cocoa. Key Features: End-to-End Traceability: INATrace allows users to document every step in the supply chain—from cooperative to export, processing, and retail—by digitally recording data like harvest dates, geolocation of farms, transportation, and processing steps. Smallholder Farmer Empowerment: The platform provides smallholder farmers with a tool to document their practices, offering them access to data that can improve farm management and demonstrate compliance with sustainability standards. Compliance with International Regulations: INATrace is designed to help fulfill the stringent requirements of regulations such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). It helps supply chain actors provide proof of origin (polygon data) and offers the possibility to cinduct a deforestation risk assessment. Open-Source and Adaptable: Being open-source, INATrace is customizable, meaning it can be adapted by governments, supply chain actors, and organizations/NGOs in various countries to suit their specific supply chain needs. This makes it scalable and affordable for diverse stakeholders.
